Roll-Ups
CorasWorks Roll-Up™ technology is
one of the most mature and comprehensive capabilities of the CorasWorks system.
At its
base, roll-up technology is the primary display of information in a CorasWorks workplace. It is
used to connect a display with information located throughout a workplace. It
can simply be used to display information from the current site or from a
single remote site. However, it is most commonly applied to provide consolidated views of information
across a number of separate sites - hence, the commonly known name "roll-up."
For example, you can use a roll-up to display
a list of all the tasks that have been assigned to you across any number of
different project sites.
When a display
is added in the form of a web part at the presentation tier, we call it
a roll-up. These
roll-ups connect a display located in one place (site, portal, or area) with one or
more lists located in any other sites, portals, or areas within your
SharePoint environment. They search the selected lists or libraries, return appropriate
information, consolidate it if necessary, and display it. Users can then view this information and
drill down into individual items. They can also perform actions with the
information.
A couple of additional notes about
roll-ups and the technology are:
-
Roll-ups are extensively configurable
by end-users using the CorasWorks web part administration interface.
In total, there are more than 200 different features that are part of the
roll-up technology.
-
Using
configuration options, you can create hundreds of different views of
information, using different displays from lists, to tree-view by source, to
charts, to calendars.
-
Using the Roll-Up Wizard, you
can quickly build you own roll-ups with custom schemas (field definitions).
-
Roll-ups can connect to remote
information across sites, site collections, and virtual servers.
-
The scope of information
consumed by roll-ups can be centrally controlled using a master list of
information sources, thereby eliminating configuration requirements as your
desired scope changes.
-
Certain behavior of roll-ups,
such as how many levels in a hierarchy it will look for information, can also
be centrally controlled.
